Ramiro Espinoza is consistently growing Retype‘s libraries-of great books, magazines and specimens, as well as its digital typefaces. The resulting volume of work is undoubtedly thanks to Espinoza’s keen eye for details and unique punchcuting experience. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that when he came across a 1742 type specimen by Claude Lamesle and spotted a design originally introduced as Gros canon deux points de gros romain, he immediately recognized interesting concepts regardless of their poor materialization. Espinoza took upon the exercise to design a typeface that would keep that specific freshness he identified, while building precise contours for a useful and readable family. Matching italics were modeled after the polished, rational design introduced by Pierre-Simon Fournier, which was later adopted by Jacques-François Rosart and other eighteenth-century punchcuters.
Dejanire Headline is a perfect fit for editorial use in magazines and newspapers, especially in robust titles, pull quotes, and deks; however, the flexible family has the qualities and features to tackle complex typesettings in multiple situations. Because of its crisp presence, clean design, and readability, it is also suitable for websites, annual reports, and corporate identities. Espinoza suggests pairing Dejanire Headline with Laski Sans (seen in the header image in this story), Verdana Pro, Proxima Nova, and Scout Text. Dejanire Sans is in the making, so watch out for it in the near future.
